World Health Day 2018

World Health Organization’s (WHO) focus for this World Health Day is the global burden of disease, the factors causing it and the impact that it is having on society.

At Lloyd Connect we support the push for Universal Health Care (UHC) with our focus still heavily on mental health which was 2017’s World Health Day focus, as we continue to recruit roles that provide ongoing support for those living with mental health issues.

It is estimated that in 2017 depression affected 300 million people worldwide, that is the number that are seeking some form of help. There are many that don’t seek help out of fear, shame, the perceived stigma attached to depression or through a lack of understanding. In Australia, Lifeline estimates that 3 million Australians are living with some form of depression or anxiety. For many living with a mental health problem such as depression or anxiety they can and do live a healthy and productive life.

The following link from WHO made for some very sombre reading. While being a sombre topic, the facts and the true-life accounts from people from around the world made for an inspiring read. As someone who falls into the category of those affected by depression l found it immensely satisfying to read and watch accounts from others that are going through something like myself.

Family, friends, work colleagues and mental health professionals all play a part in assisting someone with a mental health issue or issues. It is hard to admit to having a mental health issue, but once you do your journey begins to understanding why you feel the way you do and coming to the realisation that you’re not alone and there are those out there that want to and can help you.

The recent breaking down of the stigma surrounding depression and indeed mental health issues will lead to better understandings about the issue and to allay any fears that people may have about mental health. The work of Wayne Schwass’ PukaUp, Beyondblue, Lifeline, WHO and those individuals who have been open and honest about their own struggles with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety will and is opening the communication channels around this topic. So, if you or someone you know is struggling don’t be afraid to ask for help or to ask “R U OK” it could just be the nudge you or they need to get the assistance required.
